What a pool heater repair costs in the Conejo Valley

Most heater calls end with a sensor or a switch. A few end with the exchanger. Here is what each one typically runs, and when a new heater is the better buy.

Most heater calls end with a small part. A few end with a conversation about a new heater. The difference is usually the age of the unit and what the error code points to, so here is how the price breaks down before anyone takes the panel off.

The diagnosis comes first

A service call covers the visit and the test. If the display shows a code, write it down or take a photo. It shortens the diagnosis. Before blaming the heater, a tech checks flow. A dirty filter, a closed valve or a pump running too slow will trip the pressure switch and shut the heater down, and that is a filter cleaning or a valve, not a heater repair.

Small, medium and large

These are typical ranges for parts and labor on residential gas heaters in our area. Your quote depends on the brand, the model and what the tech finds once the panel is off.

RepairWhat it fixesTypical range
Ignitor, flame sensor or thermistorWon't light, lights then quits, wrong temperature reading$150 to $400
Pressure switch or flow switchLow flow or pressure errors when the filter is clean$150 to $350
Gas valveNo gas to the burners, or the flame drops out$300 to $600
Control board or displayDead panel, random codes, buttons that do nothing$400 to $900
Heat exchangerLeaks, soot, rust, or a heater that takes forever$1,200 to $2,500
New gas heater, installedReplacement for a unit that isn't worth fixing$3,500 to $6,000 and up

The first two rows cover most calls. Boards and gas valves are the middle. The heat exchanger is the one to think about, because on a heater more than ten or twelve years old it costs close to what a new heater does.

When replacement wins

Three things push the answer toward a new heater: the unit is past ten years, the failed part is the exchanger or the board, and the heater was undersized for the spa to begin with. A new 400,000 BTU heater from Raypak, Pentair, Hayward or Jandy heats faster, burns less gas and comes with a warranty. If the gas line or the vent needs work to meet code, that adds to the install, and the quote will say so.

If the heater is under ten years old and the repair is a board or a valve, fix it. Those heaters have a lot of life left.

Why heaters fail early here

Conejo Valley water is hard. Calcium drops out inside the exchanger tubes and builds a layer that slows heat transfer, so the heater runs longer and hotter to do the same job. Low pH does the opposite damage and eats the copper. Keeping calcium and pH balanced is the cheapest way to make a heater last. A clean filter is next, because a heater that sees proper flow doesn't cycle on its pressure switch all day.

Run the heater now and then in the off-season too. Spiders and corrosion get into burners that sit for months.
